Berlin
31. May 2017
  • Mayor Ramona Pop opens the international Conference on “Growing Smart Energy Cities”
  • Energy experts and urban planners from all over the world visit Berlin at the invitation of the Berliner Energieagentur (BEA)

Today, in the Rotes Rathaus, Berlin Mayor and Senator for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprise, Ramona Pop, opened the international conference on “Growing Smart Energy Cities” organised by the Berliner Energieagentur (BEA). Around 100 energy experts and urban planners, from many countries in Europe and around the world, exchanged ideas on how urban growth can be made sustainable and “smart”. The focus here is particularly on tools for controlling and for financing a modern energy infrastructure.

In her opening speech, Ramona Pop emphasised that bringing together subjects such as energy and digital transformation creates a great opportunity for sustainable and ecological growth. She said: “Digital transformation offers enormous potential for bringing the two sectors together and even for helping to meet the challenges of climate change. For me, two key tasks of the new Senate provide a clear illustration of this - energy transition and mobility transition. Computer applications, such as smart control systems for energy and transport can make a major ecological contribution.”

In his lecture, the Deputy Vice Mayor of Warsaw, Michael Olszewski, explained how Poland’s capital has confronted the challenges of climate protection and climate change. In Warsaw, the main concern has been to gradually decarbonise the city’s well-developed district heating networks by using renewable energy sources. Also on the city council’s agenda, however, is to implement more innovative energy supply models and to develop smart transport concepts in conjunction with local public transport services.

Social and climate-neutral city by 2050

Katrin Lompscher, Senator for Urban Development and Housing for the Federal Land of Berlin, referred to the major challenges arising from the considerable influx of people to Berlin. She maintains that the key strategic aim is to create a social and climate-neutral city with affordable housing and to keep this aim in mind when it comes to new building projects and energy-related renovation work. As an example of “smart” urban district development, Lompscher cited Adlershof Science and Technology Park, “which will develop into an attractive residential area”. She also highlighted several new-build and modernisation projects being undertaken by the municipal housing associations and the housing cooperative “Bremer Höhe”.

Ricardo Becerra, Secretary of State for Economic Development in the Mexican capital, Mexico City, presented the ambitious “Energy Transaction Act” for this metropolis of 33 million inhabitants. Among other things, it focuses on waste recycling, modernisation of the communal infrastructure, investment in renewable energy sources and the development of appropriate organisational structures. Becerra also introduced the “Smart City” project allowing for the re-use of an airport.

Looking ahead to the rest of the conference, further experience-based reports are on the agenda today and tomorrow, from cities such as Vienna, Stockholm, Paris, Leiden and Tel Aviv. Successful strategies and financing tools for realising smart, energy-efficient cities will also be presented and discussed.

During the conference "Growing Smart Energy Cities" also the award ceremony for the European Energy Service Award 2017 (EESA) was held. You can find pictures of the event in the gallery on the right column. More information about the event's speakers and their statement to Growing Smart Energy Cities are provided in the flyer on the right column. You can also find their presentations (PDF) here.

We have provided short video presentations of our speakers on our Youtube channel. Please find more information on the European Energy Service Initiative following this link as well as more pictures of the awarding ceremony.
